Scope

What a Primo Painting Job Covers

A painting quotation is mostly a preparation quotation. These are the three parts of it.

Preparation

Washing down, filling cracks and nail holes, caulking gaps, sanding back and priming. This is the part that determines whether the finish holds, and it is itemised rather than assumed.

Interior

Walls, ceilings, trim, doors, frames and built-in joinery, with the surrounding areas masked and protected before anything is opened.

Exterior

Facades, boundary walls, soffits, railings and gates, using coatings suited to sun and salt exposure rather than the same product used indoors.

Decision

Repaint, Prepare and Repaint, or Fix First?

Paint hides very little and fixes nothing. This is how we decide what your surfaces actually need before a brush touches them.

If this describes your surfacesWhat we would usually recommend
Sound walls, intact paint, you simply want a different colourRepaint. Light preparation, then coats. The quickest and cheapest of the three.
Flaking, chalking, patchy sheen, or filler showing throughPrepare and repaint. Sanding back, spot-priming and making good come first, or the new coat inherits the old problem.
Bubbling paint, damp patches, staining that keeps returningFix first. This is usually water, not paint. See Waterproofing — painting over active damp fails, normally within months.
Cracks that keep reopening in the same placeFix first. Movement cracks need addressing structurally; filling and painting them repeatedly just resets the clock.
The floor is the problem, not the wallsSee Epoxy Flooring or Microcement.
One room, one wall, one touch-upA handyman visit is usually enough. We will tell you if that is the case.
Surfaces

Surfaces We Paint

Each substrate needs a different preparation and a different primer. Using the wrong one is the most common reason a repaint fails early.

Plaster and Drywall

The most common interior substrate. Filling, sanding and a suitable primer matter more here than the topcoat does.

Wood

Doors, frames, trim, railings and joinery. Requires sanding back, knot treatment where needed, and a primer matched to the timber and its exposure.

Metal

Gates, railings, balustrades and frames. Rust has to be removed and the surface primed before a topcoat, or corrosion continues underneath the paint.

Concrete and Masonry

Boundary walls, facades and soffits. Needs cleaning, crack repair and a masonry-appropriate system rather than an interior emulsion.

Process

How a Painting Job Runs

  • Site visit

We look at the surfaces in daylight, identify what is sound and what is not, and establish whether anything needs fixing before painting.

  • Scope and quotation

You receive a written quotation itemised by area and by stage, so preparation is visible as a line rather than buried in a rate.

  • Colour selection

Colours and sheen levels are confirmed before work starts. We can advise on how a colour will read in the room, but the choice is yours.

  • Protection and masking

Furniture is moved or covered, floors sheeted, and fittings, frames and glazing masked before any sanding begins.

  • Preparation

Washing down, filling, caulking, sanding and priming. On most jobs this takes longer than the painting.

  • Coats

Topcoats are applied in the number the system requires, with the recoat intervals it requires rather than the ones the schedule would prefer.

  • Inspection and handover

We walk the work with you in good light, cut in and touch up what needs it, remove masking and clean before handover.

Quotation

What Affects Your Quotation

We do not publish painting prices, because these are the things that actually move the number.

Condition of the surfaces

The largest variable by a wide margin. Sound walls need little preparation; flaking, damp or previously badly painted ones can take longer to prepare than to paint.

Area, not room count

Cost follows the square metres of wall and ceiling, plus the linear metres of trim — not how many rooms the property has.

Number of coats and colour change

Going from a dark colour to a light one, or covering strong stains, adds coats. So does a low-opacity colour.

Trim, doors and detail

Cutting in, doors, frames, skirting and railings are slow work. A room with a lot of detail costs more than its floor area suggests.

Height and access

Stairwells, double-height spaces, facades and soffits need scaffolding or towers, and that changes both cost and programme.

Occupied or empty property

Working around a household means more protection, more moving and unmoving, and shorter working windows than an empty unit.

Primo does not quote painting without seeing the surfaces. Anything priced from photographs alone will change once someone inspects them in daylight.

Enquiry

What to Send With Your Enquiry

The more of this you can send up front, the more useful the first conversation is.

  • Photographs of the surfaces, including any flaking, cracking or staining
  • Roughly how many rooms, or the approximate area
  • Whether it is an apartment, villa or commercial unit
  • Interior, exterior, or both
  • Whether you are changing colour, and roughly to what
  • When you need it done, and whether the property is occupied
Why Primo

Why Choose Primo for Painting

Most painting complaints are preparation complaints. The value is in a contractor who prices the preparation openly instead of quoting a low rate and cutting it on site.

Preparation is priced, not assumed

Washing, filling, sanding and priming appear as their own line in the quotation, so you can see what you are paying for and compare quotes honestly.

FAQ

Painting Questions

What does your painting service include?

Washing down, filling cracks and nail holes, caulking gaps, sanding and priming, followed by the topcoats. Minor making good is part of the scope. Preparation appears as its own line in the quotation rather than being folded into a rate.

Which surfaces do you paint?

Interior and exterior surfaces including plaster and drywall, wood, metal, concrete and masonry — walls, ceilings, trim, doors, frames, railings and gates. Each needs a different preparation and primer, which is confirmed on the site visit.

Do you advise on colour selection?

Yes. We will talk through how a colour is likely to read in the space given its light and aspect, and what sheen level suits the surface and its use. The decision stays yours, and colours are confirmed before work starts.

Can you paint over damp or stained walls?

We would not recommend it. Paint over active damp fails, usually within months, and the cost of redoing it lands on top of the original job. The source needs dealing with first — often a waterproofing question rather than a painting one.

Can I supply my own paint?

Yes. Clients regularly supply their own paint, particularly for a specific colour or brand. We will confirm quantities and when it needs to be on site so it does not hold up the programme.

How do I get a painting quotation?

Send photographs and roughly how many rooms or what area on WhatsApp, or call us. We arrange a site visit, and the quotation comes back in writing, itemised by area and by stage.
