The Short Answer
What Microcement Is
A thin ornamental cementitious coating applied to walls, floors and other surfaces. Because it is a coating rather than a slab or tile, it does not require the specialised laying expertise or machinery that traditional concrete does.
Also called
Microtopping or micro-concrete — the same material under different trade names.
How it goes down
Applied in thin layers over an existing surface, not laid as a new floor.
How it looks
Can be finished to resemble stone, concrete or other materials.
Before You Decide
Is Microcement the Right Choice for Your Floor?
Microcement goes over an existing surface. Where that surface is sound and worth keeping, restoring it is often the better outcome than covering it.
| What you have now | Usually the better option | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Marble, travertine or sandstone floor | Marble polishing, travertine restoration or sandstone restoration | Natural stone can often be restored to its original finish rather than covered over. |
| Existing terrazzo floor | Terrazzo polishing | Terrazzo can usually be ground back and polished rather than replaced. |
| Garage, warehouse, workshop or industrial floor | Epoxy flooring | A resin coating system is built for vehicle and industrial use. |
| Interior floor, wall, counter, bathroom or stair where you want a seamless decorative finish | Microcement | This is what microcement is for — a continuous finish over the existing surface. |
Applications
One Surface, Room to Room
Microcement is not limited to floors. Because it is applied as a coating, the same finish can carry across the surfaces around it — which is what gives a room its continuity.

- Walls
- Counters
- Bathrooms
- Stairs
- Lobbies and corridors
- Commercial areas

Holds up under regular foot traffic.
Adaptable Finish
The appearance can be adapted to the look you want.
Works Over What You Have

Process
How We Apply Microcement
Surface Preparation
The area is thoroughly washed and cleaned, removing dust, gravel and dirt. Any metal or exposed reinforcement susceptible to corrosion is cleaned and coated to protect it.
Mixing
Mixed manually, or in a mixing vessel for larger quantities. Water content depends on the mixture and is typically around 1:8 water to microcement, added slowly with continuous stirring.
Application
Applied promptly to the prepared surface so it flows and levels uniformly, then levelled with clean tools.
Drying
The surface is left to dry before use.

FAQ
Microcement Questions
How does micro cement work?

A thin ornamental cementitious coating called micro cement, sometimes referred to as microtopping or micro-concrete, is applied to walls, floors, and other surfaces to produce a smooth, adaptable finish. It is quite adaptable and may be made to seem like stone, concrete, or other materials.

What benefits does micro cement offer?

A few of the many benefits of micro cement are its resilience to stains and scratches, adaptability, smooth surface, durability, and compatibility with a range of substrates, including metal, concrete, wood, and tiles.

Where is microcement applicable?

Numerous internal and external surfaces, such as floors, walls, counters, baths, stairs, and furniture, can be coated with micro cement. It can be utilized in living rooms, dining rooms, kitchens, and outside patios in both residential and business settings.

How is the application of micro cement done?

Using a trowel or by hand, several thin layers of micro cement are applied. A uniformly smooth surface is produced by compacting and smoothing each layer. To improve resistance and durability, a protective coating is applied to the micro cement after it has dried.

Is micro cement appropriate for locations with a lot of traffic?

Yes, micro cement is perfect for high-traffic areas like lobbies, corridors, and commercial spaces since it is extremely resilient to wear and strain. Micro cement can survive significant foot traffic and keep its beauty for years with the right upkeep and sealing.
